The Mission to the Auckland City Mission

Today some of the children went on an adventure to the Auckland City Mission to drop off all the food we have been collecting over the past few weeks.

The children were very excited as we embarked on a little mission of our own.

The car ride was filled with smiles as the children sang “the wheels on the bus..” and pointed out the Sky Tower and other landmarks as we travelled across the harbour bridge.

mission 3

Upon arrival we were greeted by one of the lovely volunteers and each child helped to carry in a bag of food to donate. mission7 mission6 mission 55 mission 4

We then spent time talking about the importance of giving and helping others, and we even got a peak at some of Santa’s helpers in the present room! We ended the excursion with a light snack before venturing back to our learning centre.

mission 8

Though this was a only a little trip, it taught the children a very big and meaningful lesson about giving and caring for others, especially around this time of year. On this note we would like to say a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our team at Lighthouse, our offices will still be open but this is our last Facebook post for the year. We do however look forward to sharing many more adventures and updates with you here in 2016!

Our Wonderful Christmas Concert!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our Christmas Celebration on Friday 11th December. It was a wonderful morning filled with joy and laughter and the children loved seeing all their parents there in the audience as well as receiving a visit from Santa Claus!

Lots of preparations went into the concert and the little ones worked very hard on practicing for the day. Every single child did a fantastic job and we couldn’t be prouder!

The preschool was decorated with plenty of Christmas cheer which created a joyful atmosphere that the children adored.

We had Snoopy and a snowy Christmas tree painted upon the windows.

Balloons and hand-made Christmas trees were hung above the rooms.

Our outside area was also twinkling with tinsel and bells!

There was certainly no shortage of Christmas spirit and decorations no matter where you looked!

The performance was split into three age groups. We had the 4 year olds singing ‘Away in a Manger’ in the setting of the nativity scene. IMG_8899

We had Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, Angels, Animals and of course Baby Jesus.

The three year olds were very festive as they were appointed Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer as their special Christmas performance. They had gorgeous little handmade antlers made with their own wee hand prints!

The two year olds and babies sang ‘I’m a Little Star’ and what a beautiful job they did! After all the performances we had a visit from a very special person, Santa Claus himself came to our Lighthouse Preschool!

The Benefits of Baking

At Lighthouse Preschool, we do a variety of baking with the children from pikelets and biscuits to muffins and scones! We absolutely love seeing how much fun the little ones have when we do baking and how proud they are with the end result! It puts a smile on their wee faces and it has many benefits on top of being fun and delicious. When we are baking with the little ones we aren’t just making food, we are teaching them how to make connections among and across multiple disciplines.

pikelet 2

Baking promotes their well-being by encouraging them to help in preparing food for themselves and others.

pikelet 1

It’s a fun way to introduce basic maths in terms of counting, time and measurement.

pikelet 3It encourages turn taking skills, responsibility, and increases their knowledge of baking.

6Baking is also fantastic for understanding processes, enhancing communication, spelling, reading, and building confidence!  The fresh and healthy baking that the children make and devour really does have many benefits and is a great way of teaching while having fun!

If you want your child to be in a fun and high quality learning environment that supports and nurtures your little one, call us on 09-535 3095 to enquire about enrollment.
